Background and Identification

The Mazda3 (called the Mazda Axela in Japan for its first three generations) is a compact car produced by Mazda, a Japanese automaker. The Mazda3 was introduced in 2003 for the 2004 model year and replaced the Familia/323/Protegé in the C-segment.

The second-generation Mazda3 was released in 2008 for the 2009 model year. In the U.S. and Canadian markets, the second-generation Mazda3 was offered with a 2.0-liter petrol engine or a 2.5-liter inline-4-cylinder engine that is shared with the second-generation Mazda6. The second-generation Mazda3 is slightly wider, longer, and lighter than the previous generation’s model. Various engines are offered depending on the market. In 2010, the Mazda3 was released in “i” (GX or GS in Canada) and “s” (GT in Canada) versions. The “i” models include a 110-kiloWatt, 2.0-liter engine, while the “s” includes a larger 125-kiloWatt 2.5-liter engine. The 3s Grand Touring trim level includes power driver’s seat, leather seats, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Beginning in 2012, the Mazda offered the Mazda3 model with ‘SkyActiv’ technology, which included a new six-speed transmission, a more rigid body, and a new direct-injection engine.

Mazda vehicles can be identified by the Mazda emblem, which depicts a pair of wings in the shape of a ‘V’ inside of an oval, and the Mazda logo, which portrays the name “Mazda” in lower-case letters. Mazda3 models include the name “Mazda3” in capital letters with the ‘3’ generally in a different font or size than the ‘Mazda’.
