Background and Identification

A boat is any type of watercraft that is designed to travel on water but is generally considered smaller than a ship. Boats vary in size, shape, and function, and have been used since prehistoric times. The oldest recovered boat in the world, called the Pesse canoe, was found in the Netherlands and made from a hollowed tree trunk sometime between 8200 and 7600 B.C.

Ships are distinguished by their larger size, shape, cargo or passenger capacity, or its ability to carry loads. In modern naval terms, a boat is a water vessel small enough to be carried aboard a ship.

Boats vary in construction methods and proportion with their intended purpose, local traditions, and available materials. Canoes have been used since prehistoric times and are still in use around the world for fishing, transportation, and sport. Fishing boats vary widely in style to match local water conditions. Pleasure craft used in recreational boating include sailboats, ski boats, and pontoon boats. Houseboats can be used for long-term residence or vacationing. Lifeboats include rescue and safety functions. Lighters are used to bring cargo to and from larger ships unable to get close to the shore.

Boats can be propelled by manpower (such as paddle boats and rowboats), wind (sailboats), and motor (including diesel, electric, and gasoline).
