Background and Identification

The cystoscope is a device that allows a doctor to perform a cystoscopy —an examination of the lining of the bladder. The cystoscope is a hollow tube equipped with a camera, lens and light on the end. The cystoscope is inserted up the urethra to the bladder.

Depending on the procedure, the cystoscope may be rigid or flexible. They come in different sizes and also vary in thickness.

A patient may require local or general anesthesia depending on the procedure, whether a flexible or rigid cystoscope is used and if surgery is being performed.
