Background and Identification

Lithotripters are specialized medical devices used to destroy kidney stones, gallstones, and other hard masses within the human body. Lithotripters use focused soundwaves to pulverize masses into smaller pieces that can eventually leave the body through the urinary tract.

Prior to the development of lithotripsy in the 1980s, patients with kidney stones had to undergo surgical treatment. Lithotripters are non-invasive and can deliver ultrasonic shock waves into the patient’s body without incision or surgical intervention.
