Background and Identification

The first model in the Motorola Moto X line was the Moto X (1st generation), and it was released in August 2013. This was followed by the Moto X (2nd generation) in 2014, the Moto X Play and Moto X Style in 2015, and the Moto X4 in 2017. The Motorola Moto X series was discontinued in 2016 to make room for the Motorola Moto Z line, but was revived in 2017 for the Moto X4. There were also several variations of these models, including the X pure and X Force variants. After the X4 model, however, the Motorola Moto X line ended, and was fully replaced by the Motorola Moto Z line.

Google acquired Motorola Mobility (the consumer-oriented half of Motorola) in 2012, and the Moto X (1st gen) was the first smartphone to be developed after this change. The phone received fairly high reviews, and the Moto X (2nd gen) was even more well-liked, although both phones were criticized for poor camera quality. The Style and Play variations were released at the same time, but for different audiences: the Play is a mid-range phone with a good battery, while the Style is more high-end. Finally, the X4 model was the first phone released in the United States to have Android One software. All of these phones use the Android operating system (OS). Any computer needs an operating system, including laptops, desktops, and phones. The operating system determines several things about a phone, including what preinstalled apps it comes with and the software it uses. Android OS phones usually come with preinstalled apps including Google Chrome, Gmail, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store, among others.
