Background and Identification
Seven years after the launch of the PS4 in November 2013, Sony unveiled the long-awaited PS5 to a record-breaking swath of pre-orders and hype. It’s available in two versions: an “all digital” model at $399 USD and a more conventional model with an integrated optical disc drive for $100 more.
The PS5 hardware features huge upgrades compared with the PS4, with Sony touting game data processing speeds “approximately 100 times faster.” The new console also supports backwards compatibility with the majority of PS4 titles, up to 8k resolution, and up to 120 frames per second of graphical output. The non-digital edition version of the system features a 4K UHD Blu-ray player.
At 3.5kg (9.9 pounds) and 260 x 390 x 104mm (10.2 x 15.4 x 4.1 inches), the PS5 is the largest console in modern history and is significantly heavier than both the original PS4 and PS4 Pro. The design sports two parallel removable and interchangeable panels (the stock ones are white) flanking a glossy black center shell housing the internals. There’s one Hi-Speed USB Type-A and one Super Speed USB Type-C port at the front of the console, along with a power button and an eject button. The all-digital edition nixes the eject button and disc drive.
The most often replaced PlayStation 5 parts include the motherboard, fan, SSD, and heat sink.
