Background and Identification

Founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1931, Porsche initially did development work and consulting, rather than actual manufacturing of automobiles. One of its very first assignments produced the phenomenally successful Volkswagen Type 1 (or "Beetle").

Porsche has long been famous for its rear-engine sports cars, particularly the 911, but more recently the company has expanded its lineup of motor vehicles to include SUVs and sedans.
