Background and Identification

The Samsung 40 inch TV with model number LA40R81BD or LA40R81BDX is an LCD television. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. In a Liquid Crystal Display television, each pixel is made of a layer of molecules in between two electrodes, as well as two filters. When electricity runs through the electrodes, it creates a voltage, which polarizes the liquid crystals. When liquid crystals are polarized, they can twist up into a helical (screw) shape. As light passes through the twisted liquid crystals, it rotates. Depending on the amount of rotation, a certain amount of light will be able to get through the filter. This light is then passed through a color filter to give it the correct shade. When this process occurs in many pixels, the television forms a picture. LCD TVs gained popularity in the 2000s, and surpassed cathode ray television (CRT) sales in 2007. As LCD televisions were developed, they replaced CRTs as well as plasma display televisions and rear-projection televisions.
