Background and Identification

The OptiPlex 760 is a series of four computers released by Dell in October 2008. Each computer in the line shares a similar architecture, but comes in a case of a particular size. This page is specifically about the “small form factor” (SFF) version of the OptiPlex 760, which is the second to smallest size of the computer, only beaten in miniscule stature by the ultra-small form factor (USFF) version. You can identify the OptiPlex 760 SFF by locating the service tag or service code (basically the serial number) on the side, back, or top of the computer case as shown in this Dell support article. Take these numbers from the sticker where they are written and enter them on the Dell support website to find your exact model.

Internally, the OptiPlex 760 SFF has an Intel processor of either the Celeron, Pentium, Core 2 Duo, or Core 2 Quad varieties. Nearby on the motherboard, the computer has four slots for memory. You can upgrade the computer to have a maximum of 8 GB of memory in these four slots. If there is not a guide here on iFixit for these procedures, the OptiPlex 760 service manual has some helpful disassembly information.

The computer also has a variety of useful inputs on the front. It is normally equipped with a slim 5.25-inch optical drive as well as a floppy disk reader. You can replace both of these components if they break, or you can replace the floppy drive with a card reader for more modern functionality. The internal storage (a 3.5-inch hard drive) can be upgraded/replaced as well; hard drive capacities have increased quite a lot since 2008.
