Introduction

As a rule of thumb, it is best practice to replace the timing belt and water pump together every 60k miles.

Part 1 is only needed if you are looking to replace only the water pump.

Since the timing cover is off and there is easy access, consider replacing both idlers, tensioner, accessory belts, thermostat and hose.

Step 1

Begin by removing the fan cover which has four 10mm bolts .

Step 2

Remove the four 12mm nuts on the fan using a wrench .

Step 3

After removing the bolts on the fan and fan cover, take out the fan cover and fan .

Step 4

Remove the pulleys with the four 8mm bolts .

Step 5

Loosen up the idler pulley by getting underneath the car and removing the 12mm bolt at the bottom of the idler pulley .

Step 6

On the bottom of the idler pulley, loosen the 12mm bolt .

Step 7

Remove the 12mm bolt with a washer from the idler pulley .

Step 8

Remove the idler pulley .

Step 9

Take off the belt .

Step 10

Remove the nut that holds the pulley in place, which should be torqued down to 250 lbs .

Step 11

Using a 19mm wrench and a pipe, remove the nut and then remove the pulley .

Step 12

Take off the spark plug wires .

Step 13

Remove the ten 10mm bolts on the timing cover .

Step 14

Take off the timing cover .

Step 15

Loosen the bolts holding the water pump and remove the water pump .

Step 16

Line up the notches on the camshafts to set the timing before removing the belt .

Step 17

Remove the bottom cover by taking off the two 10mm bolts .

Step 18

Line up the camshafts by rotating the big pulley until the notches line up .

Step 19

Remove the old timing belt .

Step 20

Remove the old water pump and thermostat housing .

Step 21

Scrape off the old gasket from the water pump housing and block .

Conclusion

- When lining up the camshafts, make sure to align the notches with the backplate, as well as the small arrow and dot on the bottom

- It is important to get all the old gasket off to prevent leaks.
