Introduction

The Amazon Fire 5th generation uses a 2980 mAh rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery Pack. When replacing the battery pack, ensure that the proper safety and protective gear are used to avoid potential harm.

    • Ensure that your device is turned off.

    • Remove any micro-SD card that may be installed in the Fire. Failure to do so could damage the micro-SD card itself or the micro-SD card reader on the Fire.

    • Holding the Fire firmly, wedge a plastic opening tool into the crease on the edge of the device.

    • Slowly work the plastic opening tool around the device until the entire back cover releases from the front of the device.

    • Using angled ESD precision tweezers, lift up on the battery cables to separate the battery connector from its socket.

    • Be sure to lift the battery connector cables themselves and not the actual socket. Doing this step incorrectly could damage the connector.

    • Carefully and slowly work a large plastic opening tool along the edge of the battery pack. Angle the tool to pry it up.

    • When you have successfully lifted the battery pack up on one side or corner, carefully wedge the opening tool under the pack about 1/2" and work around the rest of the sides.

    • Be careful not to bend the battery. Don't use too much force, as it can damage the battery.

The replacement went smoothly and. while it is listed as Moderate Difficulty, I found it quit easy. Even with my 72 year-old hands, using the iFixit tool kit. It took me about five minutes from opening the case to closing it again.

Where do you purchase the replacement battery (and what part number)?

Thanks for this guide Maximilian, and also for the link to purchase the battery, commenter Jorge! Those batteries seem to be pretty difficult to find online. Amazon definitely doesn’t make it easy to find them even on their own site, though they seem happy to sell a replacement fire… :)

Update: I had to do two of these, and it didn’t take me any longer than 10 minutes for either one of them. Easy peasy, thanks for the clear and concise guide.

If the battery connector comes off does it need soldering back on

@stash115 Are you talking about the connector attached to the wires that are on the battery or the connector on the circuit board of the Fire?

The black connector on the circuit board

A couple of details: 1. The connector is removed in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the board. I found that the gentle application of a knife blade on the side away from the wires, followed by moving the blade away from the board, will do the trick. 2. The adhesive is a 1/4” strip around the edges of the battery. There is no adhesive elsewhere.
