Step 1

Close the lid and turn the laptop over to access the back cover.

Step 2

Remove the five 4 mm screws from the back of the laptop using a Phillips #0 screwdriver.
Loosen the two remaining captive screws using a Phillips #0 screwdriver.
Captive screws tend to have a slightly larger head than normal screws, so it is important to use the correct size screwdriver to avoid damaging the screw or the device.

Step 3

To access the Dell Inspiron fan flip the device upside down.
When identifying parts in the device, the Dell logo on the battery pack should be upright.
The fan is fastened at the top left hand corner of the device.
Remove two 4 mm screws using a Phillips #00 screwdriver.
