Introduction

The next time you eat an avocado or use one in a recipe, save the stone or pit. Planting your own avocado tree is fun and quite easy.

    • After removing carefully the pit from the avocado wash it gently with warm water to remove all the flesh.

    • Be careful not to remove the brown skin on the pit – that is the seed cover.

    • Avoid using soap, just use warm water and your hands.

    • All avocado pits have a ‘bottom’ (from where the roots will grow), and a ‘top’ (from which the sprout will grow). The slightly pointier end is the top, and the flat end is the bottom.

    • Holding the pit "narrow" (pointed) side up, stick three toothpicks into the middle section at even intervals, just enough to give a firm hold. This will allow you to balance the pit on the inside of a cup, without completely inserting it into the cup.

    • The pit should sit in about 1 inch (2-3 cm) of water, so keep this in mind when inserting your toothpicks.

    • Don't insert the toothpicks to deep into the pit, this could damage it and it wouldn't grow anymore.

    • The shown avocado pit on the pictures hasn't the perfect shape with a pointier side.

    • Add water to a small, slender glass until it reaches the top rim.

    • Your glass's opening should be wide enough to accommodate the full width of the avocado pit easily; however, make sure that it is not too wide, otherwise the toothpicks will not be able to reach and the pit will fall in.

    • The toothpicks should sit on the rim of the glass.

    • Make sure the pointed end is up and the rounded end is in the water, otherwise your avocado will not grow.

    • The bottom half of the avocado should always be in water.

    • Place the glass with your avocado pit in a warm place with plenty of light.

    • Change the water every 5-7 days with fresh water.

    • And now you have to be patient. It takes up to 8 weeks until your avocado pit sprouts!

    • Don't forget to fill up the water from time to time.

Conclusion

Stay tuned to see our grown avocado tree in a few weeks! The next technique will show how to plant the avocado tree into a pot with soil.
