Introduction

Use this guide to tighten Tektro V-brakes on your Biria: Citibike 700C Model ST 8-Speed Model.

Brakes are an essential part of your bike - ensuring that they are not too loose or tightened to the right parameter is important for your safety. Having faulty brakes can lead to potential issues when it comes to slowing down at the desired rate or can even lead to the bike not braking at all. It is important to tighten your brakes in order to keep yourself and those that you share the road with safe.

Before using this guide, we suggest gathering the tools recommended to tighten the Tektro brakes. We also recommend a tidy workspace and wiping down your bike prior to starting Step 1, as dust, dirt, and any other debris on the bike may make it difficult to properly adjust the bike parts as intended.

    • Unlock the brake barrel adjusters fasteners with a flathead screwdriver in the clockwise direction.

    • Loosening the fasteners will help to loosen the barrel in Step 2.

    • Twist in the clockwise direction to tighten the barrel adjusters.

    • While squeezing the bike brake check the distance between the brake handle and the bike handle using a measuring device.

    • It should be about an inch if properly tightened.

    • The second image has a loose brake. The distance is less than an inch, where it should be more than an inch (reference step 8 for the right distance). This indicates that the brake is still loose.

    • Prepare for the next few steps by loosening the bike brake barrel adjuster if it is fully tightened by turning it clockwise a few times.

    • Start by squeezing the brake arms together as much as possible.

    • While maintaining the position of the brake arms from Step 4, loosen the bolt that secures the cable clamp using a 5mm Allen Wrench and turn it counter clockwise.

    • Loosen the bolt until the cable can be adjusted easily by hand.

    • While keeping the bike brake arms in the same position as described in Step 5, pull the brake cable to adjust the distance between the brake pads and the wheel.

    • Stop pulling when the brake pads are one or two millimeters away from the wheel.

    • With the brake arms still squeezed together, use the 5 mm Allen wrench to tighten the cable clamp by turning the wrench in a clockwise direction.

    • Tighten the brake barrel adjusters again (as seen in step 2). Do this until the brake handle reaches 25.4 mm from the handle when squeezing.

    • When tightening the brakes, ensure that the brake pads never touch the side of the wheel. If this occurs, then the brake cable was pulled too tight in Step 6 and needs to be loosened.

    • Finally, use the flathead screwdriver to lock the barrel adjuster fastener. Use the screwdriver to twist the fastener in a counterclockwise direction until it is tight.

Conclusion

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
