Introduction

AUTHORS NOTE: This guide was put in obsolete status years ago and pulled down. As I am revisiting how I handle these guides, I am republishing this "as-is". NO SUPPORT will be provided; this tool is intended for pre-2008 computers that often lack native USB boot support. Modern BIOSes cope with USB boot with no problems.

Guide notes

  • PlopKExec IS A LINUX ONLY TOOL. It will not work with ANY OTHER OSes.

If you are trying to boot Linux on an older system (or an older BIOS with poor USB boot support), this guide will show you how to use PlopKExec as a workaround.

    • Only download an older version if a feature you need is removed or the new release has a serious bug.

    • To download PlopKexec, click on this link (plop.at site). If the page does not come up, select Boot Managers and choose PlopKexec.

    • Once you are under Boot Managers, find PlopKexec. This file must be burned to a CD due to the nature of these older computers, use your preferred CD burning program.

    • Due to the abundance of CD/DVD burning applications, no troubleshooting will be done.

    • Find the plopkexec.iso file on your system.

    • Right-click the PlopKexec ISO. Select the application you use (Ex: Windows Disc Image Burner) and write the ISO to CD.

    • Once your selection CD/DVD burning application is loaded, follow the prompts to burn your bootable CD.

    • A lot of really old computers lack a OTBM to bypass the default boot order. If you have one of these, you MUST change the BIOS boot order in many cases. This is less of a problem for early 2000's systems and BIOSes, but can still occur.

    • Put the PlopKexec CD in your system. Select the CD as your boot medium.

    • After boot into PlopKexec, select Start [distro name]. Once selected, the system will boot from USB.

Conclusion

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
