Introduction

Hello, my name is Andy Ling.

Education

I am currently a 2nd year undergrad majoring in Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Davis. I chose Engineering because I have always been interest in the STEM field. What made me choose Mechanical Engineering was taking Physics in high school. Physics made me realize that I enjoy force analysis and kinematics, and I felt mechanical engineering was the best match with these interests.

Aspirations

Once I graduate from Davis, I want to enter the industry. With my career, I wish continue to learning and ultimately, I want to work on something that can be used to improve the world and to improve the standard of living. In the meantime, I want to continue gaining new skills and knowledge from university.

Skills

  • CAD (SOLIDWORKS)
  • CAM (Fusion 360)
  • Dimensional Tolerances and GD&T
  • Programming (MATLAB, Java)
  • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
  • Machine Shop Experience (Manual Lathe, Vertical Mill, Drill Press, Sanding Belt)

Projects

  • Gyroscope (Designed on CAD, and manufactured in machine shop)
  • Totem (Designed on CAD, and manufactured in machine shop)
  • Blackjack (Created using MATLAB App Designer)

Repair Experience

I have little repair experience. In the past, I have made attempts to repair items by consulting online resources. However, I usual fail with these repairs due to a lack of knowledge in diagnosing the issue, a lack of knowledge with repairing the issue, or a lack of tools to make those repairs. Though I lack successful repair experience, I do enjoy taking apart simple items, understanding how each component work, and trying to reassemble them to the same arrangement. Here are some examples:

  • Taking apart mechanical pencils and pens, and reassembling them
  • Taking apart my pokéwalker and reassembling it
  • Taking apart flashlight and reassembling it
