J.H. Emerson CoughAssist CM-3000 CM-3200

The J.H. Emerson CoughAssist is a mechanical insufflation-exsufflation device made by the company J.H. Emerson. The company is known for developing innovative devices to help people with breathing difficulties. The CoughAssist CM-3000 and CM-3200 are available through medical equipment suppliers or suppliers of respiratory care products.

CoughAssist CM-3000 and CM-3200 were released in the 2000s with CM-3000 being used for adults and the CM-3200 for children. The device uses controlled, deep inhalation followed by a strong exhalation to help clear secretions and mucus from the lungs.

 This device includes a mouthpiece or mask which is connected to the patient while it uses a motor to create controlled deep inhalation, causing the patient’s lungs to expand and loosen any secretions that may be present. Then, using its motors, CoughAssist creates a strong exhalation, forcing out the secretion from the lungs. The device has multiple settings and can be adjusted to certain pressures, flow rates and duration of inhalation. The device can run on AC power or a battery pack.

Features of CoughAssist CM-300 and CM-3200 include mechanical insufflation-exsufflation technology, adjustable settings, portability, and an air compressor used to generate controlled deep inhalation.

CoughAssist devices have undergone a series of changes from the year 2000 to 2023. In 2020, Phillip acquired J.H. Emerson, including the CoughAssist CM-3000 and CM-3200 and made many changes to the devices. The new CoughAssist can be viewed on the Phillip company website which is used more frequently today.

To identify CoughAssist CM-3000 and CM-3200, the top of the front of the devices should have a J.H. Emerson logo, and the top-right of the front of the devices should be labelled “CoughAssist”. These devices have three to six switches, a handle, a white plastic body (usually in the colours white and grey) and a clear plastic chamber. There is a power button on the top, at the front of the device which looks like a circle with a vertical line through it or it might be labelled as “I and O” (I for on and O for off) or a similar label. The model number of these devices can be found on the back of the device or sometimes on the device manual.

To distinguish J.H. Emerson CoughAssist CM-3000 and CM-3200 from other models, users can look at physical aspects like the location of labelling and the buttons. CM-3000 is small and portable while CM-3200 is slightly larger with a built-in compressor which provides a large range of pressure settings.
