Background Information

In 2009, the Kindle 2 was released by Amazon's Lab126. As the successor to the original Kindle, the Kindle 2 has cellular 3G capability, 6'' e-ink display, and 2GB of memory. The Kindle 2 is 8" x 5.3" and weighs about 10 ounces. It comes in black or white and has a metallic backing. The Home button is located on the right side with the Next Page button underneath it. Another Next Page button is on the left side below the Previous Page button. The QWERTY keyboard is below the screen. The five-way controller is to the right of the keyboard and between the Menu and Back button. The back is made up of a matte grey top cover and metal casing underneath it. The back has the Amazon Kindle logo, an FCC symbol, and speakers on the bottom.

The Kindle 2 features many design and hardware improvements over the original Kindle. It has a slimmer design, QWERTY keyboard, faster processor, text-to-speech option, and longer battery life. Some criticisms of the Kindle 2 include the incapability to read Word and PDF documents, high price, removal of the SD card slot, and lack of public-domain books that are available on the Sony Reader. In November 2009, Amazon responded to some complaints with an update that introduced PDF support. Despite the criticisms, the slim design and hardware improvements have made it a successful e-reader.
