Background and Identification

Now known as Sony Mobile Communications, Inc., Sony Ericsson was founded as a joint venture between Sony, a Japanese conglomerate corporation, and Ericsson, a Swedish networking and telecommunications company. Sony purchased Ericsson’s share in February 2012. In March 2020, Sony established an intermediate holding company called the Sony Electronics Corporation. This holding company incorporates the three businesses that make up Sony’s Electronics Products and Solutions segment, including Imaging Products and Solutions, Home Entertainment and Sound, and Mobile Communications.

Sony Ericsson launched their first Windows Mobile device, the Xperia X1, in 2008. Sony developed two more Windows Mobile devices, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 and the Sony Ericsson Aspen, in 2010. In 2010, Sony Ericsson switched to Google’s Android operating system. A Sony Windows Phone was planned for 2011, but no Windows Phone device was ever released by Sony after 2010.

Windows Phone is a family of operating systems for smartphones developed by Microsoft. Windows Phone was launched in October 2010, though work on the Windows Mobile project may have begun as early as 2004. Windows Phone replaced Windows Mobile and Zune and was primarily aimed at the consumer market.

The final Windows Phone update was released in June 2015. Windows Phone is now a discontinued family of operating systems.
