Background and Identification

The Sony XZ Series is part of the Sony Xperia X flagship series manufactured by Sony Mobile. After the Xperia Z series was discontinued in favor of the revamped Xperia X series, the XZ subcategory was introduced as an informal continuation of the Xperia Z series.

The Sony Xperia XZ, the first of the XZ line, was announced in September, 2016 and was seen as a true successor to the Xperia Z5 and the entire Xperia Z series. The XZ phone was followed by the Sony Xperia XZs and the flagship Sony Xperia XZ Premium in 2017.

The original XZ phone was one of Sony’s first phones to use USB-C connectivity for charging and data transfer. Also, its rear camera has laser autofocus, a first for Sony, in addition to hybrid contrast/phase detection autofocus, found on previous flagships. Moreover, the XZ was also the first Sony device to have an RGBC-IR color sensor to assist the image sensor in capturing accurate colors, temperature, and white balance. The XZ was also the first smartphone to sport a five-axis digital image stabilization system for capturing clear photos and videos without blurs.
