Background and Identification

The TI-89 Titanium is a graphing calculator developed by Texas Instruments (TI). TI-89 calculators include a computer algebra system that allows the symbolic manipulation of algebraic expressions so that equations can be solved in terms of variables. TI-83/84 series calculators can only give a numeric result. The TI-89 Titanium was released in 2004 as a replacement for the TI-89.

The TI-89 Titanium is also called the HW3, but new Titanium calculators were upgraded in 2006 and called HW4. HW4 models offered increases in RAM and speeds up to 16 MHz. The TI-89 Titanium features 4 MB of RAM with 2.7 MB available to the user and 256 KB RAM with 188 KB available to the user. The Titanium model also includes a USB On-The-Go port for connectivity with other TI-89 Titanium calculators or to a computer to store programs or update the operating system. It can store up to 99 graphing equations defined and saved for each graphing mode.

TI-89 Titanium calculators include the name “TI-89 Titanium” in a white font at the top of the device with the manufacturer’s name, “Texas Instruments,” in capital letters. It includes a 160 by 100 LCD (liquid crystal display) dot-matrix screen. The display automatically shows the date and time based on the calculator’s internal clock. The Titanium model requires four AAA batteries.
