Introduzione

Where did the Aluminum plate come from especially as this was not listed among the things required?

    Sam Azi -

It is listed in the materials list as a “3 1/8 x 7 tie plate,” but the wrong size is given. It should actually be a 1.8” x 5” tie plate, as depicted in the photos, above. You can find this plate at any Home Depot, Lowes Home Improvement, or Ace Hardware (https://www.acehardware.com/departments/...).

Question: I ordered a new visor from Amazon. Everything came out as shown, but I seem to be missing the plastic clip that’s shown in the middle small photo here, and looks to be attached to the swing arm assembly in earlier photos. It did not come with the new visor, and was not on the old one. Which may be part of my problem. I can get the new visor in, but if you move it, the whole swing arm with visor falls out. Does anyone know what this part is and how do I buy one?

How do you remove the visor from the swing arm to begin?

Is there any electrical work you need deal with? it looks like in the first pick there are some wires hanging from the swing arm that I am guessing power the light

For future readers: simply remove the visor from the ceiling as described in step one. No need to separate the visor from the swing arm in advance. Proceed through the steps as described. I used a 3x5 tie plate (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Simpson-Stron...) and it worked beautifully. I screwed the plate (2nd row of holes) to the edge of a piece of wood about the same thickness as the visor and bend it around that wood as a guide. It resulted in the 1st and 3rd rows of holes aligning so that I could put the screws all the way through and secure with lock nuts. I used #6-32, 1.5" screws (2) and #6-32 locknuts (2). The holes in the tie plate were ever so slightly too small for those screws but a drill bit one size too large for the hole widened it perfectly with ease. The screws were too long (1" was too short) and needed to be cut off with a dremel afterwards. (I couldn't find a 1.25" length screw for the job.)

Well, for most of us the visor has completely fallen off of the swing arm already, so it's a non-issue. But thanks for the condescending reply to the OP who took the time to write an incredibly helpful review.

This is a Toyota design flaw. It is a safety issue and is negligence on their part not to admit failure and issue recalls. This is in no way isolated to the Camry. It occurs in RAV4s, Tacomas, Highlander's, Tundras and possibly more.

My wife's 2012 Venza has this problem, as does my 2011 Camry.

Is it necessary to do this repair on a new or used visor? Just bought a 2007 Camry LE, without drivers side visor.

Kenneth Lemons -

If I'm understanding the online forums right, Toyota never upgraded the visors so a new visor (really new or used/new to you) are both going to potentially have this problem develop. Since the car install is an absolute breeze, I'd say install a visor and don't do this unnecessary fix until/unless it becomes necessary.

This happened to my 2007 Camry years ago. Sad that Toyota never recalled it as it is huge danger to driving - not only when the visor continuously drops down but also not being able to use it for it's sole purpose - to protect the sun from your eyes while driving.

Thank you for your DIY.

Lost one of the metal clips fell inside the cavity of the car is there some where to purchase these clips

There is a factory recall on this for 2007 thru 2011. Check with the dealer or https://www.toyota.com/recall. The above repair is kind of a rig job.

no recall on 09 Camry

Hi Luper,

My 2009 LE had this Problem for a long time coupled with the oil vanishing so fast (4 liters every 2 weeks). How did I sort out the issues?

1. If you vehicle has done more than 100k miles, you will need to check your gear oil and probably change it. Please buy Toyota Gear oil (comes in a metal gallon).

2. Check your fuel pump, get it tested to determine if it’s failing or not, you can use the opportunity to wash the fuel filter and the fuel tank too.

3. Check you throttle pedal. The pedal is electronic and can develop faults after so much use. You might need to change it. You might be lucky to get one from a dealer who would let you test it on you car to confirm if the fault is fixed.

4. Clean all the injector nozzles.

5. Check your catalytic converter bank 1 and 2.

My 2008 Camry did the same. I took it in for that accelerator recall/fix and they did something under the floor mats, the accelerator pedal and flashed the computer. The latter was the one that fixed the problem.

My problem isn’t with the plastic body inside the visor, but with the tabs in the roof. The rear clip popped out, and the tabs in the roof/ceiling were bent, and I have no idea what they’re supposed to look like.

Thanks alot for the genius fix!!!

I’m looking for a fast, easy fix. Can a large binder clip apply enough pressure to hold the visor in position? I’m going to try that.

kathykgenet -

My drivers side visor is flopping down. Evidently it’s a manufacturing defect. Time for Toyota to man up and fix it. I bought my car new .. I’ve never had this type problem with my visor in any car I owned.

I put a magnet on the visor (next to the mirror) and a matching magnet on the ceiling liner. Both magnets were 1inch square with adhesive backing. Make sure you line them up with the right polarity. I got the magnets at Walmart in the crafts sections. —- Seems to be working OK, but the magnets could be a little stronger. ——- Shame on Toyota for not fixing this design years ago.

So, again:

The swing arm is removed in picture (step 2] as you are ripping open seam- how did you get the swing arm to come out? No information provided as to how, just removed between steps 1 & 2. *How* is what we are asking. No need to refer us back to the incomplete instructional as aforementioned.

And if there IS wiring present for lighted mirror (as in my 07 le), then maybe in some models it does not/should not come out… ?

Any positive, non-repetitive feedback is appreciated!

I bought a repair kit about 5 yrs ago from CamryVisorRepair.com and it still works great 5 years later. Everything came with it including a prebent bracket much stronger than the one pictured above. It also came with a perfectly match thread and needle and i cant even tell that its been repaired. Also had great step by step videos that showed how to fix all of it.

The entire replacement visor is approx. $35 right now. How much is your time worth?
