Prereq guide to remove the refrigerator evaporator cover.

    • Unplug your refrigerator before you begin your repair.

    • Open both French doors for the refrigerator compartment.

    • Remove all the loose shelves and bins from the refrigerator compartment.

    • The bottom shelf is clipped in place. Follow the next step to remove it.

    • Two stiff plastic tabs (one on each side) secure the bottom shelf in place.

    • Press both plastic tabs firmly with your fingers and lift upward to unclip the bottom shelf.

    • If the shelf doesn't unclip, you can try using a flathead screwdriver to press each clip in.

    • Remove the bottom shelf.

    • Use a flathead screwdriver to pry and remove the top screw cover on the evaporator cover.

    • Remove the screws securing the evaporator cover.

    • Grasp the right edge of the evaporator cover with your hands and swing it outwards toward you.

    • Don't try to fully remove the cover in this step, as it's connected by several wires.

    if you see signs of ice buildup, let things thaw before you go further- in my case, the evaporator coils were covered with ice, which had reached the point where it was hitting the fan blades. My whole cover was frozen in place, which made removing it without wrecking the Styrofoam insulation very difficult.

    • Squeeze and disconnect all the wire connectors connecting the evaporator cover to the refrigerator.

    • Pull the evaporator cover towards you and remove it.

    If your issue is ice build-up, the evaporator cover may be frozen in place. If you can, leave the fridge open and let things thaw for a while before you try to open it (and the ice might be your whole problem anyway, so you may solve the problem right there)
