I fundamentally agree with the ethos of this company and I'm happy to be able to work along side them while also receiving course credit. E-waste is a real and growing danger that effects the most vulnerable among us most intensely and any thing that can be done to mitigate it is a worthy cause. As engineers, it's important to be mindful that this is threat which we have a real hand in creating; this e-waste is all designed by and built by engineers. We have a moral obligation to be active in trying to mitigate this problem. The right to repair is an integral part of this fight: IFixIt is providing a tangible good in the world.
As far as I'm concerned, I'm a double major in ME and EE attending UNO with the intention of pursuing a career in robotics and automation engineering, and have recently joined the student chapters of IEEE and ASME. I have a year and half experience in a professional machine shop specializing in heavy equipment repair. Primarily, I was responsible for disassembly and reassembly of gear boxes, but I also spent a good deal of time doing machining processes on various equipment: mills, drill presses, and lathes.
