Beirut Map

Status

The map of Beirut is far from completed. Apart from some areas, main roads are mostly mapped; detailed mapping is needed.

Divisions

Beirut is divided into 13 suburbs (also called quarters or municipalities). In addition, we count 3 PRCs (Palestinian Refugee Camp), which we also consider as suburbs when mapping. Each quarter is divided into sectors; sectors are currently considered hamlet when mapping, although the definition of a hamlet is not suitable.

Note that the sector division is discussable, it might not be accurate or complete.

Discussion

Note to the use of hamlet: I started tagging them suburbs but after rendering they showed up with very large fonts at low-intermediate magnification, so the choice was to tag them hamlets although the tag is not correct. We can try to tag them name=locality, but this in turn is reserved for an unpopulated area in OSM. --Metehyi 17:49, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Since hamlet and locality are both not suitable, I suggest we create a new custom tag called 'sector' instead of 'hamlet'. These may not appear on the default generated maps; but note that the rendering of maps is done using specific rules which can be changed. The most important thing is the integrity of the data in the OSM database. --Bmichel 00:54, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

To my knowledge, only the default tags are rendered in Mapnik and Osmarender. So if you put place=sector it will not show up at any level of zoom. You can apply for a new tag ( a long process, must be submitted for vote etc...). Instead of sector I think the french has a better designation "quartier" or "lieu-dit" which is a subdivision lower then suburb higher then hamlet (french "hameau") . --Metehyi 16:05, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

We can then agree on using 'suburb' for quarters, and 'hamlet' for sectors. We will need to mention on the wiki what these are equivalent to. If you agree with my suggestion, let's make it a mapping guidelines, and close this discussion. Also, do not use my wiki page for chatting. You can use IM or IRC like normal people. --Bmichel 18:10, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Try changing some hamlets for suburbs in a close area, wait a day or two to render and zoom progressively. If you see a bad visual effect (tagged suburbs will cover everything else e.g. street names, tagged amenities etc...) then revert your changes. If you are satisfied , keep the tag suburb. However another user might prefer less jammed views and revert back to a weaker value. The areas are still unpopulated enough so the more populated tags in the future the less visual comfort. --Metehyi 19:06, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

We should not associate a lot of importance to the quality of the rendering, this is a job handled by the renderer; there is also a new tool (in closed beta) that allows you to render maps the way you want. Data integrity is our main focus. I think that tagging the Beirut quarters as 'suburbs' and the sectors within every quarter as 'hamlet' is ideal in our case. This means that no other elements should be tagged as 'hamlet' or 'suburb' in Beirut. Is this OK by you? --Bmichel 19:36, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

No idea for the moment, as I said above, make your own trial-an-error, this how I proceeded. --Metehyi 22:56, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
