Bus routes in New Jersey

Tagging

Relations

Most buses operate in two directions, taking different sides of a divided highway or going in the same direction around a one-way street. In these cases, separate route relations should be created for each of the two directions. The two directions should then be combined in a route_master relation for the route itself. For example:

The route_master should be added to the network for New Jersey Transit Buses,  2956527 (JOSM).

Tags

New Jersey Transit bus routes should be tagged as follows:

Key Value
type=* route
route=* bus
network=* NJ Transit
name=* NJTB - ### - City 1 to City 2
ref=* ###

A public_transport=platform node indicates where passengers should wait on the side of the road. This node should be created on the correct side of the road, using the stop name that is assigned by New Jersey Transit. A highway=bus_stop tag should also be assigned to the node for backward compatibility. All platform nodes should be grouped together at the beginning of the route relation, so as not to interrupt the continuity of the route. JOSM will indicate any discontinuities in the route relation in red; these should be fixed before uploading.

A public_transport=stop_position tag may also be used to indicate the position where the bus stops on the road. It does not interrupt the continuity of the route, so it can be placed in the order that the bus drives the route.

Route variants

Only the major route variants should be mapped. These are the routes that proceed along the main travel corridor and collectively account for at least 50% of the trips on the schedule. OpenStreetMap can only serve as a guide to indicate which buses are *available* near a location in New Jersey. If a bus rider needs to know whether a particular stop is served by a bus at a specific time, he must consult the timetable or a trip planner.

The reason for this limitation is the complexity of the bus schedules. New Jersey Transit has a habit of operating variant routes to serve a major employer or a college. Some of the route variants operate only one trip per day!

For example, bus 814 ( 5656067 (JOSM)) has routes for various combinations of the major stops:

  • Walmart North Brunswick to downtown New Brunswick
    • via North Oaks Boulevard
    • via Brunswick Shopping Center
    • via DeVry North Brunswick
  • Walmart North Brunswick to Middlesex County College (Edison)
    • via downtown New Brunswick
    • via downtown New Brunswick and Heller Industrial Park
    • via DeVry North Brunswick
  • DeVry North Brunswick to Middlesex County College (Edison)
  • DeVry North Brunswick to downtown New Brunswick

This is just the weekday schedule in one direction! The reverse direction adds additional variants, and the weekend schedule adds even more.

It is infeasible to map all the route variants. Only the main travel corridor and the main route variants can be maintained.

Route variants may also be represented by mapping only the detour off the main travel corridor. The rider will have to read the NJ Transit timetable to see which sections of the route operate at what times.

Status

Most New Jersey Transit Buses ( 2956527 (JOSM)) were mapped before Public Transport Version 2. There are very few route_masters, and most routes contain an unordered combination of all routes.

1-99: North Jersey Cities

Two-digit bus numbers are assigned to routes that serve Newark and other cities in North Jersey. Routes that do not contain the name of a city usually serve Newark. Some of these routes connect North Jersey cities to other parts of the state.
