CartONG

CartONG is among the relatively early users of OpenStreetMap in the humanitarian sector: we started promoting the concept back in 2008 and have also had the opportunity of working with some of the pioneers of the platform. In 2011 we became an organization member of the French OSM association. During the Ebola outbreak and as part of our partnership with MSF-CH, we led our first important project using OSM in 2014. Convinced of the tremendous potential of OSM in disaster response, CartONG decided to get further involved on this topic and to this end joined the Missing Maps project in 2015. Along the years we have successfully built a strong volunteer community of mappers and validators and we managed to implement multiple OSM-based projects.

• Remote mapping support for our main humanitarian partners and other small NGOs: between 2015 and 2020 CartONG has run about 200 on-site and online mapathons for about 30 different partners supporting more than 35 humanitarian and development projects
• Refugee site mapping as part of our ongoing partnership with UNHCR: remote refugee site mapping, field data collection and OSM integration.
• OSM-based participatory mapping projects: we extended the remote & field OSM contribution into a larger package of activities designed to better take into account the views and inputs of beneficiaries and local populations and bring new insights into humanitarian and development projects.
• Remote support to local OSM communities: in particular, we have supported the creation of a local OSM group in Madagascar and we have since then continued to support them to structure and develop their activities, as well as other country communities
• Promoting and raising awareness about OSM and Open Data in general.

The following matrix lists the current "permanent" team of CartONG, i.e. its employees and long-term volunteers ("service civique", the French civil service), who are in charge of the creation and monitoring of the organization's projects.

The team also includes volunteer contributors and validators who are creating most of the data we map and therefore the source of most of our impact! See next section on how to get involved.

• Remote data quality control (validation) sessions [French speaking]: every Thursday morning from 10 to 12 am (UTC+1), online. Accessible to those who have taken part in at least one Mapathon. You're a validator or would like to learn data validation (using JOSM) and contribute to our projects? Please get in touch, we would be pleased to welcome you in the team!
