Cyclone Idai

General Information

Cyclone Idai Response is an Activation of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), requested by the International Federation of the Red Cross, to improve the basemap in areas of Mozambique affected by existing flooding in Zambezia province, exacerbated by the Cyclone, and Sofala province hit by the Cyclone itself, and resulting storm surges on the coast. HOT is also now supporting MSF in a number of project mapping areas of Zimbabwe impacted by Cyclone Idai.

Map and Data Services

About OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap offers an online map (and spatial database) which is updated by the minute. Various tools and services allow data extracts for GIS specialists, Routable Garmin GPS data, Smartphone GPS navigation, and other device-compatible downloads. With an internet connection, regular syncing is possible with open access to the community contributed data as it comes in, with OpenStreetMap's bulk data downloads ideal for use offline. In addition, maps can also be printed to paper.

Browse the Activation Area to get a feel for the data that is currently available. Different map styles including an Humanitarian style can be selected on the right side, and some data may not render (appear) on the map, but could be exported from the underlying database (See export section below).

Paper Maps

Poster size Maps and normal sized paper atlases of custom areas can be printed:

  • See OSM_on_Paper for an overview and list of platforms and services for printing maps.
  • We suggest FieldPapers Paper Maps with grid for field survey or general navigation purposes.

Exporting OpenStreetMap data

See Downloading data for instructions on getting large scale map data, or see the focused exports below:

Offline Road Navigation with small devices

With the availibility of Small communication devices, Navigation Offline data proves to be very useful to the humanitarians deployed in foreign countries. We support the humanitarian NGO's using navigation data and invite them to give us feedback on the utilization of these devices in the context of field deployment.

  • See Software/Mobile for more information on using OSM in portable devices.
  • See also Mobile Mapping on LearnOSM.org for information on mapping in the field.

About This Activation

About HOT

  • To learn more about the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), explore more of our wiki-pages (root: HOT) or our website hotosm.org. We are a global community of mostly volunteers, we are also a US Nonprofit able to contract with organizations (email info at hotosm.org to contact our staff), we are also a 501-c-3 charitable organization.

History of this Activation

Reactivity of the OSM Community

  • 9th March 2019 the impending Cyclone was brought to the attention of the Disaster Activation Team. A size-up was conducted, but without a mapping request and with the Cyclone so far out and path therefore fluctuating, the decision was made to hold on activating while more research was completed.
  • 13th March 2019 a request for mapping was received from the International Federation of the Red Cross, noting priority areas for mapping in relation to the existing flooding in Zambezia province, and impending Cyclone in Sofala province.
  • 14th March 2019 an updated size-up was completed, outlining the request from the IFRC and the new information regarding flooding in Zambezia, as well as updated information about the Cyclone. The same day the first project centring around the flooded town of Mopeia in Zambezia province was created on Tasking Manager to be mapped by volunteers.
  • 15th March 2019 the initial mapping the flooded town of Mopeia was completed in around 24 hours (validation still ongoing), and therefore a second project was launched in the larger town of Nicolada.
  • 16th March 2019 validation of town of Mopeia completed, and support of MSF projects in Zimbabwe following the impact of Cyclone Idai there is activated with six projects.
  • 19th March 2019 mapping and validation of town of Nicoadala complete.
  • 20th March 2019 request from IFRC to map areas in and surrounding both Beira and Buzi. Two urgent priority projects created.
  • 21st March 2019 request put in and approved in relation to volunteers for mainly validation on Cyclone Idai MSF and IFRC projects from GISCorps
  • 22nd March 2019 new IFRC supported project in Zimbabwe around a dam overflow on the first villages downstream, map of village of Murambinda and its surroundings requested as a result.
  • 23rd April 2019 received final area of interest from IFRC, last projects will be released as existing are completed. (NOTE: Also started monitoring Cyclone Kenneth expected to make landfall in Northern Mozambique later in the week).
  • 10th June A bug in the system started deleting Projects on the Tasking Manager and we lost 6 projects - #5840, #5844, #5948, #5953, #5968, #5969. The developers stopped further loss and are working on fixing the bug and hope to restore the missing projects.
  • 13th June Four more projects lost #5831, #5895, #5907, #5964.

Available Imagery

Availability of imagery is good across project and surrounding area.

OSM Default Imagery Sources

Bing is the newest and clearest imagery

Bing

Bing provides a global imagery data source that is the 'default' Imagery available for OSM (default option in most editors).

Alternative Imagery Sources

How to add/use Alternative Imagery

In many cases better imagery is available than the default; when possible we set up a remote link directly via the Tasking Manager, so there is nothing to do, the iD editor and (as long as enabled) JOSM will automatically add the imagery.

Additionally, with JOSM, it's relatively easy to add special imagery if the license is appropriate for tracing into OSM. For more details see JOSM Imagery Help
