New Hampshire/Rivers

There are few things more important to the culture of New Hampshire than its streams and rivers. The earliest inland settlements in the state were along the coastal rivers, and many of the state's villages and cities grew up around sources of hydropower. As of May 2020, some of the state's streams and rivers have been well-mapped by OpenStreetMap, but many are missing critical details like names or have not been included at all. Also, there was an import of NHD/GRANIT data in 2009/2010 that introduced many river area polygons that could be improved. That import covered parts of Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maine, so some of the streams included in this project are in those states. This project uses the hydrologic unit system as a basic measure of "importance" to limit the task to a manageable size and to break up larger rivers into smaller bits.

General Mapping Guidance

The page Rivers describes how to map rivers. In New Hampshire, it is preferred to use the natural=water+water=river scheme for the river area polygon. Also, a Relation:waterway should be created for each stream/river.

The Tasks

Each task is either a smaller river that is short enough to do in a few edits, or it is a portion of a river that is very long and would be overwhelming to do all at once. Lacking a status on a task does not mean that the river has not been well mapped; it just means a contributor to this page has not checked it yet.
