Nottingham/Basford

The main purpose of this page is to provide more detail on mapping status, progress and issues, than is possible on the main page for the city.

Basford is historically one of the industrialised villages which were incorporated into Nottingham in the 19th century. This 'cake slice' includes the historical centre of Basford (Old Basford) and that part W of Highbury Vale to Bulwell. The area contains a mix of old industrial areas along the Leen, with infill of new housing, some older terraced housing, and various residential developments from the 1930s onwards. It also includes a significant amount of post-industrial land, particularly along the Leen corridor, and where former railway lines cross the area.

More detail on status is needed because the area is not covered by aerial photography on Yahoo, and significant change has occurred in the past 50 years and NPE is therefore not useful.

Boundaries of the 'Cake Slice'

Very simply a quadlilateral bounded by the Nottingham ring-road on the S, Nuthall Road (A610) on the W, Cinderhill Road on the N and Highbury Road on the E. It includes that part of central Bulwell next to the Leen (Bulwell Bogs, tram and train stations), and housing and the hospital on the W side of Highbury Road.

Total area is about 2.4 sq km (240 ha).

Subdivisions for mapping and monitoring status

Given the size and complexity of the area it will require concerted survey effort over time. In order to facilitate such effort, and determine what remains to be done, the area has been broken down into much smaller units. The basic principle is that an individual unit should be mappable (all roads, footpaths, cycleways and most POI) on foot in 2-3 hours.
