Overview

Seneca Village was a small community of mostly former slaves on the west side of Manhattan. It existed from 1825 to 1857. It fell within the boundaries of the newly planned Central Park and was taken by emminnent domain for the park. Recent archeological digs have revealed details about the life of the residents.

Seneca Village is listed as a National Historic Landmark
