Oregon/Railroads

Like highways, railroad tracks have been imported from TIGER data and they share the same problems like unconnected segments, wrong tagging, missing bridges and railroad crossings and positions that are frequently off quite a lot. So a review is necessary as it is for highways. This page is currently a work in progress, now alpha as its basic structure has emerged as stable.

Active Lines (Mainline, Branch, Industrial and Short)

Passenger trains (Heavy Rail, Light Rail, Trams/Trolleys, Monorail, Tourism/Historic/Heritage Rail)

Tracks, stations and platforms used for passenger trains are properly collected into route=train relations, or relations tagged route=light_rail, route=subway or route=tram when those are the underlying rail infrastructure.

These tables are "somewhat complete." If you find a train, route (relation link, Review Status...) that needs to be added, updated or improved, please do so!

Amtrak operates intercity passenger trains in the contiguous United States: many intrastate and passenger=regional trains and all interstate, passenger=national (long_distance), highspeed=yes, service=night, and passenger=international trains (some cross into Canada); see OSM Amtrak® wiki table. Try OpenPublicTransportMap.

A subset is repeated here with just these three routes which serve Oregon: two routes are Amtrak proper, one is a joint operation between Amtrak and the Washington Department of Transportation & Oregon Department of Transportation known as Amtrak Cascades®:

Railtrails and "Transitways"

A railtrail uses a former railroad right-of-way (ROW) for equestrian, bicycle or hiking paths, preserving the ROW for possible future re-use as a railway while providing a useful service in the meantime. These are often tagged highway=cycleway or highway=footway depending on whether they prefer or allow bicycle or pedestrian traffic. It is OK to tag both railway=abandoned and highway=cycleway if it is the case that an abandoned railway became a railtrail (for bicycle use, for example). The Railbanking process was formed to support the creation of rail trails and for the possible future re-use as a railway.

There are entries in the Abandoned tables (below) which contain significant segments of railtrail (usually ped/bike). It can be a bit of a coin-toss whether they should be here or there. They may be found in both if the entirety of the right of way is not being used for trail.

These tables are incomplete. If you find a line (relation link, Review Status...) that needs to be added, updated or improved, please do so!

Disused lines

Lines, expressed as route=railway relations, that don't have regular traffic but with all infrastructure in place. Tracks are tagged railway=disused.

This table is believed to be only partially complete. If you find a line (relation link, Review Status...) that needs to be added, updated or improved, please do so!

Abandoned lines

Former railroad lines, whether still visible on the ground or not, correctly expressed as route=railway relations. Ways are usually tagged railway=abandoned or rarely, railway=razed.

There are entries in the Railtrail and "Transitway" table (above) which contain significant segments of abandoned rail. It can be a bit of a coin-toss whether they should be here or there.

These tables are incomplete. If you find a line (relation link, Review Status...) that needs to be added, updated or improved, please do so!
