This proposal is for a set of tags to describe buoyage in the sea, rivers, lakes, etc.

Required Tags

All buoys using this tagging scheme should be tagged with man_made=buoy

Relations

Lateral Markers

All the lateral buoys marking a channel should be put in a relation and tagged with buoy:type=lateral_channel. This allows the position of the channel to be unambiguously determined without needing a reference direction for the local lateral bouyage. Channels with bifurcation buoys down the middle should be treated as two separate channels, with the bifurcation buoys being members of both.

Considerations

  • The Americans swap red and green for lateral buoys so some care must be taken when rendering them on the map to avoid confusion.

  • Lateral buoys are placed with respect to the "upstream" direction (i.e. the port buoy is on the port side when heading upstream or into the harbour and on the starboard side when heading downstream or out of the harbour). Maybe a relation would be useful for grouping a set of starboard and port markers together, making it clear where the channel is.

  • There should probably be a method of specifying how big a buoy is and its' light flashing sequence if it is unusual. Coordinate with Talk:Tag:man made=lighthouse.

  • I agree with OJW. Relevant info that applies to buoys includes:
    • Character (abbreviated description of light colour/frequency/grouping)
    • Range (Nominal range of light, specifying what units (usually nautical Miles in the systems ** I've seen - UK and Irish)
    • RTE (Radar Target Enhancer)
    • Fog Signal (horn/whistle/none)
    • Body (or Shape) (can, nun, spar, ...)
    • Daymark (There are standard colours for cardinals and laterals)
    • RACON (RAdar BeaCON), which responds with a morse letter to help radar identification)

Yes, there are some tags on the lighthouse page that might be useful here (although they're currently in a "navaid:sea" namespace), eg.

Would it be worth dropping the ":type" from each of those tags to save typing? e.g.

  • buoy=lateral
  • buoy:lateral=starboard
    •
  • buoy:cardinal=north

It's important to know if the buoy colour implemented in IALA A or IALA B system. What about to add special tag "buoy:system" with a value of "A" or "B". --Gipszjakab 20:17, 2 June 2008 (CET)

  • And how about the SIGNI system (Signalisation des Voies de Navigation Interieure) used for inland waterways?
