Description

See the full definition on wikipedia

A canyon is a route within a stream or river. Difficulty varies a lot from a simple walk with water to very difficult rope techniques under waterfalls. Those Canyons requires equipement : Helmet, climbing harness, sometimes long rope like climbing and wet suit for cold water. The activity is called canyoning or canyoneering.

Most of the time it will not be possible to have a good trace with a GPS inside a canyon, the purpose will be to have at least the track from a possible parking place to the beginning of the canyon. The first node of the canyon will be tagged according to difficulty of the way. A relation will be made between the access track, the canyon and the return route.

The proposal will not replace dedicated topo guides but provide a help to find the route to the site.

note : If no special equipement is required, it should be tag as highway=path with the appropriate sac_scale=* but not with this proposal.

http://www.efcanyon.net/efcanyon/base-de-connaissance/normes-et-chartes/105-norme-classements-de-canyons

French FFME rates canyons lik this:

v letter followed by arabic figure from 1 to 7 (open scale) for difficulty in vertical parts

a letter followed by arabic figure from 1 to 7 (open scale) for difficulty in the water

Roman figure from I to VI for the overall difficulty and engagement

Other rating like American cayoneering association http://www.canyoneering.net/docs/ratings.pdf must be possible to tag
