Project Transformap

This page aims to specify tags for the Project TransforMap to map projects, initiatives, spots and spaces which lead to a better world. Better means: Free, Fair and Sustainable.

How will it work?

A lot of new things will be mapped - and many different kind of things. Community gardens, fablabs, repair-cafés, cooperatives, points to pick your food coop vegetables, gift-boxes, events and the like. Of course, all this different information does not fit into a single database. Therefore, TransforMap aims to provide inter-operable standards, and is way bigger than OSM alone. Different types of data will go to different databases, and OSM should be the place where all 'ground truth' geodata should end up.

The taxonomy described here is not only intended for enhancing OpenStreetMap data, but to data belonging to other databases as well. Some things do not fit into OSM? Okay, but they will find usage in complementary databases. In the process of finalizing the proposal we have to sort out which of the tags fit into OSM and which do not.

Portable JOSM for TransforMap

A portable version for JOSM for Windows with the presets and plugins already configured for TransforMap is available here. It's 83MB, because Java is already included. Just extract and click on "start JOSM".

For user-friendliness there are some filters which gray out features not needed for TransforMap like railways, power lines and administrative borders. So less fear to break OpenStreetMap for newbies ☺.

JOSM-Preset

A JOSM-Preset named “Preset for project Transformap” is now available directly in JOSM. Github repository here, help for translations appreciated!

JOSM Mapping Handbook

A (at the moment only German) Handbook for adding Transformap objects with JOSM was written, available as PDF. The source (odt) is available in the same Github repository. Help would be greatly appreciated with translating! - Species 12:12, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WARNING: This taxonomy is evolving! All keys, values and descriptions are subject to change at any time! Please check this page regularly for updates. Tipp: add this page to your watchlist (star at the top bar).

IF YOU FIND ANY PROBLEM, PLS ADD YOUR QUESTION AND TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION HERE.TNX

Development of a taxonomy with many people in parallel as complex as this project in a Wiki like this is not viable. While Telcos or Workshops, work happens in this Ethercalc. Shortly ofter great reworks, this wiki should get synced to the latest state.

A working group of ~10 people is having regular Telcos, and management is done in this Trello-Board

Overpass-query

You can use the 'steering wheel' ("")- icon nearby each of the keys/sections to get an Overpass_turbo-map with all objects currently tagged with the key/key-group. Then You have to click the 'Run'-Button in the upper left corner to get the results.

Here you find a map for all used values: .

Needs fulfilled by a community

label:de=Bedürfnisse

An economy is supposed to fulfil our needs and those of everybody else. But which kind of need exactly?

We tag objects that fulfil a need directly (e.g. bike-sharing point) and that attend to a need (e.g. the HQ of a bike-sharing cooperative) differently.

Direct

Use the "provides" (exact tag to be discussed, see Talk page)-key to tag which needs are fulfilled by this object directly, e.g. you get food or education there. Use of multiple values (separator ";") is encouraged!

Some of this tags are implicit on most OSM objects (e.g. amenity=restaurant fulfils the need for food). The better way than to tag "provides=food" on each restaurant, is to store these implications in a database (e.g. Wikidata). One that wants to create a "map of food" gets the appropriate item categories from that DB, and then queries OSM via Overpass API. Currently, a static file is used as a "database" to fill the filters on demo.transformap.co.

Only tag this values where it is not implicated by the OSM "main tag" - so tag e.g. provides=learning_opportunities on a restaurant (but not provides=food+drink) that offers cooking courses too!

Self-description of a community

There are many alternatives to the dominant economic model and to the "usual" way of producing goods and services. All these alternatives have developed for decades, they are organized in different "tribes" and self-identify in different ways. Here are some of the labels these "tribes" use to describe themselves.

Current Changes to this section: mixing organisations (GEN) with loose descriptions (Commons) is not viable. People have different views what a Commons is, and Tags that cannot be defined sharply will not get accepted in OpenStreetMap. So this will be split up into:

  • networks (key will be proposed)
  • other descriptions (will end up in other DBs besides OSM)

Decision:

We will differentiate between initiatives that are FORMALLY part of a Network (e.g. GEN) and initiatives, that see themselves part of (more looser) definitions, e.g. Commons. -> new table for networks needs to be added

Knowledge and Resource Management

Mode of Organization

The following tags are ONLY meant for companies!

The way a project, initiative or enterprise is organized tells a lot about its purpose and character. Here you find answers to questions like: Who owns? Who benefits from? Who takes the decisions? What about democratic standards within the project? And so on.

compare with the following tags: Key:operator, Key:operator:type, Key:ownership aka "owner:type", Key:owner, Key:brand -> We are not talking about the economy as we know it with their classical forms and structures. I tried to make it more clear in the keys.

TODO: this has to be merged to avoid doublicated tags -> Has to be merged with what exactly? (Silke)
