Rutland is a county in East Midlands England at latitude 52°36′14.40″ North, longitude 0°35′34.80″ West.

Rutland  57398 is a ceremonial county and unitary authority in the East Midlands region of England. It borders with the ceremonial counties of Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire.

Britain's smallest county... and a perfect destination for a mapping weekend.

The Midlands user group organised a Weekend Mapping Party to map as much of Rutland as possible in October 2006 (see Rutland Mapping Party for details)

About Rutland

  • Britain's smallest county, 38,151 ha. Population (2001) 34,563.
  • Between Leicester and Peterborough.
  • Two small towns (Oakham and Uppingham) and around fifty villages.
  • Rutland Water - reputedly Western Europe's biggest man-made reservoir, and with a cycleway around it.
  • Other than construction of the reservoir, little change in the last 50 years, so out-of-copyright mapping could be used for some purposes.
  • Except for a short stretch of the A1 cutting through the eastern edge, there are no dual carriageways - just three primary A roads (A47, A6003, A606), one secondary (A6121), and a small number of B roads (B664, B668, B672).
  • One passenger railway line, one station, and one freight railway line. (Two railway lines if you include the East Coast Main Line, which runs through Essendine).
  • No navigable waterways (one unnavigable).
  • Usual-to-low density of rights of way.
  • Very picturesque

CottesmoreCottesmore65%65%60%Ben. Missing Part of the Eastern End of the Village. - RAF Cottesmore. Clive All parts of Cottesmore accessible to the public were mapped as part of the Mapping Rutland Weekend. The road layout in front of The Sun Inn needs clarification. We have a photograph of Hall Close street sign which does not have a matching way - perhaps something is wrong around Rogues Lane. There is a road name missing from the estate off of Rogues Lane before the cemetery. At the other end of the village there is a road name missing by Burley Road. Finally Clatterpot Lane starts off as a footway, and turns into a road. Transition was not recorded. Intend returning.
