New Zealand State Highways

OpenStreetMap currently has quite good coverage of New Zealand State Highways, however tagging is inconsistent and there are sections where they either mapped but not tagged or not mapped at all.

This project page is an effort to keep track of the status of the individual highways in terms of how completely they are mapped and how consistently they are tagged.

Tagging Guildlines

There is ongoing discussion on Talk:New_Zealand about consistent tagging for State Highways. Until a consensus is reached it probably best not to go making wholesale changes to existing tagging.
The initial scope is identify what is there in terms of highways and ref tagging for each highway, add ref tagging where it is missing and identify sections not mapped. The intention is also to add route relations to group all the ways that make up the individual highways.

Useful tools

There is a few methods that can be useful for checking the current status of a particular state highway.

Xapi can be used to extract the osm data for a single highway by constructing a query with an appropriate bbox and tags. This returns a .osm file which you can then open in an editor like JOSM so you can look for gaps and check tagging. Note that the data downloaded via xapi is intended for viewing only, if you want to make changes download live data in a new layer before editing.

e.g. the following url will return the data for State Highway 71 allowing for 3 different formats of the ref tag.

Query-to-map can be used to extract osm the data for a single highway and will automatically convert it to a kml file and overlay it over a OpenStreetMap map so you can see what parts have been mapped.

e.g. the following url will give the Query-to-map form pre-filled with a query for State Highway 71 allowing for 3 different formats of the ref tag.

Planet is a full copy of all osm data updated weekly or it is possible to get Planet#Extracts just for New Zealand. These can then be imported into a database using various tools like Osm2pgsql so you can query the data in any way you want.
