Background and Identification

A camera lens is an optical assembly used to capture photographs. Camera lenses are also known as photographic lenses or photographic objectives. They are either an optical lens or an assembly of lenses. Camera lenses are typically used with a camera body or mechanism. Lenses allow the camera to capture images on an image storage device. These storage devices include either photographic film or other media able to store images electronically or chemically.

Lenses used by video cameras, still cameras, telescopes, and microscopes are very similar. However, the design and construction of the lens differs for each application. Camera lenses are sometimes permanently fixed to the camera assembly. Some camera models feature interchangeable lenses so users can vary focal lengths, apertures, and other lens properties.

Modern photographic cameras are the predecessors of the camera obscura, which is Latin for “dark room.” So, even before the invention of the camera, photographic lenses had already been designed. Photographic lenses were originally designed to capture a large, flat image plane. Modern camera lenses include zoom lenses, fisheye lenses, macro lenses, apochromatic lenses, and process lenses, among other lens designs.

Camera lenses are usually made of several elements that are generally made of glass. Glass lenses are praised for their scratch-resistance and their good optical qualities.
