Examples of barriers

you may find a barrier somewhere. This page can be used to post or find a photo of a new kind. It hopefully helps to avoid redundancies.

- hedge A line of closely spaced shrubs and bushes, planted and trained in such a way as to form a barrier or to mark the boundary of an area. established tag
- fence A freestanding structure designed to restrict or prevent movement across a boundary. It is generally distinguished from a wall by the lightness of its construction. established tag
- wall A freestanding structure designed to restrict or prevent movement across a boundary made from solid brick, concrete rocks, and almost always built so that it is opaque to vision. established tag
- jersey_barrier A barrier made of heavy prefabricated blocks - often made out of concrete, but sometimes plastic ones filled with sand or water. established tag
- snow_trap A freestanding structure designed to hold back snow, not passable but not made to prevent access to something not used yet
Linear barrier with sides
- retaining_wall A structure that holds back soil or rock from a building, structure or area. Retaining walls prevent downslope movement or erosion and provide support for vertical or near-vertical grade changes.

- city_wall A fortification used to defend a city or settlement from potential aggressors. From ancient to modern times, they are used to enclose settlements.
  • right side is bottom, left side is top. if both sides are same height then add "two_sided=yes".

- bollard Solid (usually concrete or metal) pillar or pillars in the middle of the road to prevent passage by some traffic. established tag

- gate Placed on a node on the way where the gate is located. Combine with access=* where appropriate. established tag

- cattle_grid Bars in the road surface that allow wheeled vehicles but not animals to cross. Sometimes known as a Texas Gate, even outside of Texas established tag

- turnstile no tag for this type yet. suggest turnstile; josm has a symbol for this
- motorcycle_barrier Shoulder-level squeeze barrier permitting pedestrians and some cyclists, but not mopeds or motorcycle. established tag
- cycle_barrier Chicane barrier for cycleways and footways, preventing motor vehicle use and either discouraging cycle use or slowing it down significantly (depending on the spacing). One- or two-zig variants are common. also used: barrier=chicane, barrier=zigzag
- sump_buster A low concrete block that permits vehicles with a certain minimum space between wheels and a minimum clearance from the ground (to the axle or engine block). Often signed with a "No exit" sign with a sub-sign showing the profile of the block an an axle with wheels above it. There is usually other barriers surrounding it so that driving over the block is the "easiest" way to pass the barrier. Parking is not permitted in front of it to allow emergency vehicles to pass. Norwegian name for sump buster is Sporsluse.
