Tag:barrier=kissing gate

A  kissing gate is a type of gate where you have to go into an enclosure and open a gate to get through. They are commonly found in places where a normal gate would make it too easy to get through for cattle, especially if the gate were left open. Level crossings and woodland areas are two areas where they can often be found.

Like the more general barrier=gate, it's a section in a wall of fence which can be opened to allow or restrict access. They are usually made of wood or metal.

How to Map

Simply add the tag barrier=kissing_gate to the node where the kissing gate is.
This can be placed on a linear barrier, in the intersection node of a linear barrier and a highway way, or at a highway way node.
Avoid tagging highway intersections as that does not make clear which way has the impediment.

Types of Kissing Gates

There is no well-developed set of tags for defining the exact type of kissing gate, but to date we have identified the following general forms:

• Triangular in cross-section. Usually made of wood. Not wheelchair accessible, and can cause problems for some people or if carrying a rucsac See image of wooden kissing gate). Suggested tagging kissing_gate=triangular_profile
• Circular in cross-section. Usually made of metal. Probably not wheelchair accessible. Suggested tagging kissing_gate=circular_profile
• Circular in cross-section, but larger than above, with a lock for unlatching the central gate mechanism. The lock uses a RADAR key. These gates are designed to be fully wheelchair accessible. Suggested tagging kissing_gate=large_circular_profile with wheelchair=yes and centralkey=nks.
• Square in cross-section. Usually made of metal. Probably not wheelchair accessible. Suggested tagging kissing_gate=square_profile
• Square in cross-section, but larger than above, with a lock for unlatching the central gate mechanism. The lock uses a RADAR key. These gates are designed to be fully wheelchair accessible. Suggested tagging kissing_gate=large_square_profile with wheelchair=yes and centralkey=nks
• Large gate pivoted at the centre. Latched at either end. All other versions have the gate pivoting from one end. Suggested tagging kissing_gate=central_pivot

Once a consensus is reached on the terms for each of these (see suggested values above) we will use the existing de facto kissing_gate=* for this.

Possible tagging mistakes

• barrier=gate with gate=kissing or gate_type=kissing: not advised, use the more specific tag
