Corvallis is a city in Oregon, and the seat for Benton County.

What needs work

Some of the material here has been moved to the Benton County, Oregon page.

City Streets

Quite a bit of TIGER data needs to be verified (or replaced, see #Data Sources). See the Maplint link for details. We also need your GPS tracks! Our goal is to validate all the street TIGER data for this area with GPS tracks. Please upload your tracks so that we may use them!

Routes

Remember to tag routes using relations, don't tag the underlying way. The maps should be picking up relation tags soon. State Routes seem to be fairly well covered, but CARTS, CAT, SMART, Cherriots, Greyhound and Amtrak routes are missing or incomplete in this region.

Places

The GNIS for Oregon was imported, and this covers Corvallis, but it's wildly inaccurate at scales useful for city level street maps. All GNIS points need to be checked and corrected. The imported GNIS data is also quite old now.

Parks

Only a few parks have been mapped. Boundaries need to be added from GIS data and trails and amenities need to be added by field mappers.

Tagging

Corvallis has some unique tagging situations. See Features with links to tag usage for details on tagging conventions in the area. Add your thoughts to keep everyone on the same track.

Data sources

We have obtained permission to use both City of Corvallis (Alice Grucza, Public Works Department, GIS Services) and Benton county GIS data (Doug Sackinger, Benton County GIS Services). I (Brian) emailed them and explicitly asked for permission. They both gave me permission and directed me to their web sites where policy says the data is public domain can be used. They are both interested to know how this project turns out.

Corvallis City Public Works Department

The TIGER data could basically be replaced by city and county data so it's not really worth a lot of energy to edit what could be replaced by more accurate public data. I am working on this Brian Wilson 00:24, 11 November 2010 (UTC).

Many of the Corvallis city boundaries didn't appear to load properly. We need help editing and cleaning up this data.

A few of the relevant layers available through the GIS offices include:

  • Street center lines (City and county data have been merged for this as of 2011)
  • Bicycle lanes and bicycle paths
  • Railroads
  • Building footprints
  • Park boundaries (polygons)
  • Trails
  • Water bodies in both line and polygon formats.
  • Transit (bus) stops

Most points of interest are not in this list, so if you want to edit Corvallis maps, go ahead and add POIs.

Although the city has an FTP site, if you want the most current data you should contact them and ask for it. They don't routinely update the FTP site.

The city has switched from NAD27 to NAD83 datum but the FTP site might still be in NAD27. It is very important that it be reprojected before being used.

Oregon State University College of Forestry

Mapping in McDonald forest is relatively mature. Roads, trails and amenities have been mapped to a mature level. Many of the hiking and mountain bike trails have been checked by multiple people. The forest boundary has been hand-drawn from aerial photos and public GIS data. The forest boundary needs to be extracted from GIS data and loaded to replace the hand-drawn data. Dunn forest is mapped to a lesser degree at this time. The boundary has been hand-drawn and about 80% of the roads have been mapped.

Here is a link to the OSU CoF GIS page where you will find no useful data.

They have GIS data for the McDonald/Dunn experimental forest but no one has contacted them to obtain rights to use it or to obtain current data. They used to have it up on their web site but it's not there now, probably due to budget problems. (They laid off the person who was their data steward.) Currently using GPS traces is probably the most effective way to get current and relatively accurate data for this area. Some users have hand drawn MacDonald, Dunn, and local park boundaries.

It might be more accurate to use the county tax assessor records to determine the boundary of the forest area, and we already have rights to use that data. I just built a shapefile this way. Now I have to figure out what to do with it. Brian

I (Brian Wilson) have a copy of their shapefiles and it's really nothing to shake a stick at.
