Key:boat

Legal access restriction for boats. In the sense of OSM these are small boats and pleasure crafts, including yachts, canoes and rowing boats.

In CEVNI (European Code for Inland Waterways, also used either formally or informally outside Europe, see Implementation document) small craft are defined as less than 20 m long.

See the hierarchy as mentioned in access=* for Water-based transportation:

• boat=* (covers the following small boats and pleasure crafts, including yachts)
  • motorboat=* (boats and yachts using motor, on also for sailing boats using the motor*)
  • sailboat=* (boats and yachts using sails, on doing way with sail, not using the motor*)
  • canoe=* (boats without sail or motor, such as dinghies, canoes, kayaks, rowboats etc.)

• ship=* for larger ships

The tag is also used to indicate if a river is practically navigable or not for boats, however, this is ambiguous, as it does not provide any information about the boat types for which this is valid. Access limitations can however also be constituted by legislation which might refer to on-the-ground factors factors such as date, water level, or damage to the surroundings caused by using the waterway.

Values

• boat=no – Access by this transport mode is not permitted, they don't have a right of way.
• boat=yes – The public have official, legally-enshrined right of access, i.e. it's a right of way.
• boat=private – The owner may give permission on an individual basis.
• boat=permissive – The owner gives general permission for access.
• boat=designated – The route is marked as being a preferred route, usually for a specific vehicle type or types.
