The gun_turret=* is used to indicate if a gun is emplaced in a protective armoured turret that rotates with the gun.
Armoured turrets, sometimes described a cupolas, were often incorporated into coastal artillery defences. Sometimes a gun turret could even be encased in a casemate=*

Common mistakes
A gun turret's armour is fully enclosed and gives the gun and crew full protection on all sides and from the sky. An armoured gun that is open at the back or at the top has a shield.
