This key is used by JOSM/Validator and Osmose to distinguish between public transport route relations of old and new scheme for proper validation and usage of both schemes.
- public_transport:version=1 for old scheme
- public_transport:version=2 for new scheme (aka PTv2) according to public_transport=*
This key was introduced in JOSM version 6813. See JOSM ticket 9545.
JOSM has the ability for adding the roles stop and platform of new members automatically, but only if public_transport:version=2 is set on the relation and one of the keys bus=*, tram=*, train=* etc. on the new member.
