This tag is used together with landuse=residential to mark the "type" of residential area.
Note that landuse=residential tags, including this subtag, are to be used on larger areas of land, not on individual buildings.

There is no strong consensus on which categories to use in this subtag. See the taginfo list of current values used.
Proposed approaches include:
- Proposed features/residential=gated – Residential community with strictly controlled entrances, enclosed by a perimeter of walls/fences/etc.
- residential=university to indicate that the residence is for a university.
- Talk:Key:landuse#Refining landuse=residential.
- Talk:Tag:landuse=residential#Further refining: residential=*.
There is also residential=duplex to indicate that an urban area is filled with duplex houses.
