Pennsylvania/Public Lands

Tagging

For all state owned public lands in Pennsylvania, the following tags may be used:

Conservation Area 3 Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks
Environmental Education Center 3 Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks

In addition, the following tags can be present if applicable:

Additional GNIS tags can be present, but are not necessary since such information can be found through the feature id.

Discouraged Tagging

Absolutely NO LANDUSE should be associated with public lands. While it may appear that a State Forest is mostly wooded and it would be appropriate to add a natural=wood tag, this is usually a gross oversimplification. It is preferable to add landuse features as separate polygons.

In addition, the following tags are discouraged. If you see these, verify that they can be replaced with something else:

State Forests

Pennsylvania has 20 different state forest districts that are managed to preserve natural resources and provide "dispersed, low density outdoor recreation".[2] All state forests were finished being mapped in 2016, but PASDA boundaries have since been updated.

Wild and Natural Areas

Wild and natural areas are designated areas within Pennsylvania's state forest and park systems that are "set aside to protect unique or unusual biologic, geologic, scenic, and historical features".[3] While natural areas are found within state forests AND state parks, wild areas are unique to state forests. Pennsylvania has 81 natural areas (59 in state forests, 22 in state parks), 18 wild areas and 2 wild plant sanctuaries, with more constantly being proposed.

State Game Lands

All 309 PA State Game Lands[4] have been mapped and have the standard set of tags. However, many of them were imported over a decade ago and have boundaries that are inaccurate and/or need to be properly interfaced. Boundaries are being updated using data from PASDA.
