Description
Kluning (walking wearing ice skates) between two frozen bodies of water
Group: Sports
Used on these elements
Status: in use

Kluning, derived from the Frisian klune, is the act of crossing a short stretch of land between two frozen bodies of water wearing ice skates — i.e., a short overland interruption during an ice skating trip.

How to map

Set a way along the kluning path connecting it at each end to the two waterbodies and waterway=*. Add the tag ice_skates=kluning to highway=* where applicable.

When joining a highway=* to waterway=* for a kluning section, add ice_skates=kluning to the where they join, so it is clear that this is not a mapping mistake (as some validators might assume), but a point where land based transport becomes (frozen) water based transport and vice versa.

Only tag the parts of the waterway=* that should be circumvented via the kluning path with ice_skates=kluning — don't tag the waterway=* part of the kluning detour though!

Status

In practice this tag is probably mostly useful for dedicated kluning infrastructure that remains in place throughout the year such as kluning bridges, or (possibly) parts of an ice skating route relation.

This tag borrows heavily from canoe=portage — a similar concept for canoes and kayaks and such, but without the ice.
