Isolated dwellings are the smallest kind of human settlement. They are outside other settlements (this does not mean that they are outside administrative boundaries) and form by themselves a settlement. The whole settlement must not consist of more than 2 households. For bigger settlements use another tag, maybe place=hamlet might be appropriate.

How to map

Place a node at the center of the isolated dwelling, like the main building or some other central point and tag it place=isolated_dwelling.

Mapping isolated dwellings as areas

The most common method of mapping isolated dwellings is with a node placed at the center. Some mappers however map isolated dwellings with an area instead of using a node. Isolated dwellings often do not have a verifiable outline though and different interpretations of the meaning of areas representing populated places exist - more details can be found on the place key page. Data users should not expect the area geometries of isolated dwellings to have a particular meaning.
