Water

Water is a broad category covering the coastline and the marine environment, including marine navigation; together with inland waterways and human water management.

Classification

Water features can usefully be classified within OpenStreetMap as follows (with some overlap):

• Coastline, including the many features found along the edge of the sea
• Marine, for features found further out to sea, including oil drilling platforms, conservation areas and islands as well as shipping routes and marine navigation.
• Waterways, covering all watercourses including rivers, streams, waterfalls, lakes, reservoirs and man_made waterways
• Water management, which covers man-made uses of water including reservoirs and dams, pipelines and water wells, public drinking point and fountains.
