amenity
Description
For describing useful and important facilities for visitors and residents.
Group: Amenities
Used on these elements
Documented values: 305
Useful combination
Status: de facto

amenity=* is the top-level tag describing useful and important facilities for visitors and residents, such as toilets, telephones, banks, pharmacies, prisons and schools.

How to map

Mapping varies widely depending on feature:

  • As a stand-alone node, e. g. amenity=grit_bin
  • As a node on a way, e. g. amenity=parking_entrance (as a node on a road)
  • As an area, e. g. amenity=pub. If the amenity shares a boundary with a building, both features may be mapped on a single area element.
  • In some cases, it is considered acceptable to map it as a node on an area outline, e. g. if the area is a building=* and the amenity is an amenity=cafe, some map the amenity at the location of the entrance (on the building outline), rather than inside the enclosing building area)

Consult the page describing the specific amenity to find out what is the preferred way for your amenity.

Tag history and naming

Amenity key has quite wide coverage of many different values, with some people complaining about it.

In general OSM tagging system is quite free form, and for established tags there is often overall better to avoid migrating tags. Though amenity=embassy is a case of successful deprecation thanks to a well prepared proposal. There is also case of healthcare=hospital that some want to use instead of amenity=hospital.
